Kurt Cobain: The Rise & Fall Of Grunge Music

Seattle in 1991: Before Microsoft, Frasier and Starbucks.

Ask someone what they think of when they hear "Seattle" and chances are that the 3 words above will surface. Not so at the beginning of the 1990s. Seattle was synonymous with one thing and one thing only: Grunge music and flannel shirts.

In wasn't much later than its release in September 1991 that Kurt Cobain's kerrang was heard around the world. Bleach may have been their debut, and "In Bloom" was the first single off Nirvana's brilliant Nevermind album, but it was that opening riff off "Smells Like Teen Spirit" that captured the imagination of teens and twenty-somethings around the world.

back to the roots

It didn't take too long for critics and peers to start looking up Jimi Hendrix's birthplace to find out what the noise was all about. And noise it was. Great noise. Nirvana was definitely not the first band out of Seattle to play Grunge music, but it was the one that would make it explode, sending it to ridiculously stratospheric heights before making it crash and disappear from the earth's surface.

Who were some of the true pioneers? Bands like Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone were playing what would soon be labeled Grunge. But these outfits were genuinely alternative . Alternative in the sense that it was drastically different than 1980s Rock. While the Def Leppard's and Bon Jovi's created great rock music sugarcoated with layers of guitar tracks and monster vocals, Grunge music was sharply more raw and devoid of the excessive production polish.

punk mach II

Grunge blended rock with punk, fitting since Punk came around in the 1970s to give classic rock a good kick in the caboose when the likes of Styx and Boston were filling airwaves.

But once bands like the Sex Pistols got old and tired, the new wave of British metal rose to the surface, spearheaded by Iron Maiden on the Metal side and Def Leppard on the Rock side. These bands dominated the 1980s, selling millions and developing loyal followers worldwide. But like history, Rock music is cyclical, and Grunge was Punk for the 1990s.

$ells like green $pirit

Because of its sheer raw edge and no-frills production, grunge was an easy sell for young music lovers. And while previous '80s outfits were happy singing about sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, grunge songwriters seemed to let Seattle's gloomy weather (and a ton of other stuff) get the better of them.

Nirvana was hardly alone. Bands like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam quickly gained a loyal following as well. While Soundgarden's Louder Than Love was a good album, it wasn't until the epic Badmotorfinger (with a distinctive Sabbath sound) that Soundgarden staked a claim to the throne. Pearl Jam was no slouch either, its Ten album is a classic.

top of the space needle

Kurt, Eddie, Chris, and company were definitely the toast of the music industry. Regulars on MTV, grunge music had definitely put the '80s sound to rest. But how alternative can you be when you are on NBC's SNL ?

Although all of these bands took harsh criticism, many showed integrity. Pearl Jam stopped making videos all together. Nirvana kept trekking along, following Nevermind with In Utero almost 2 years later. But things were different, very different.

Cobain was commanding the following that paralleled the Morrison's, Joplin's and Hendrix's. Living in the '90s also added an extra dimension as the media became omnipresent. While Cobain had never sought the role, he, even more so than Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, became the symbol of a generation. The media criticized him, his fans worshipped him, but no one understood him.

dob 02/20/67 - dod 04/05/94

A few months after the critically acclaimed In Utero , Kurt Cobain was found dead in his house. As expected, an outpour of tears, sadness and confusion reigned among fans. As expected, most of his critics rushed to add that Cobain, very much like the movement he represented, was unhappy and ungrateful for life. Then, it was no surprise that when life was taken away from him, few in the media offered much compassion.

suicide, murder... overkill

Initially, most indications pointed to a probable suicide. It was no hidden fact that Cobain could have been happier. His songwriting reflected his state of mind, which was unstable at best. Stone Temple Pilots' frontman Weiland was another recovering drug addict that was a mess. Years before, Mother Love Bone's frontman also overdosed. The list of messed up musicians who had either succumbed to drugs or suicide was staggering in the industry.

Cobain had a daughter with Hole front woman Courtney Love. While she was one of the few to go along with the conclusion that Cobain had taken his own life, many questions lingered. Doubts about the validity of his suicide note, the credit card use before and after Cobain's death, his excessively high injection of heroin, and many other factors would make any law enforcer have some serious doubts.

Moreover, while Cobain was clearly troubled, many doubt that he would have killed himself. Many, including Tom Grant, the California state private investigator and former detective with the LA County Sheriff's Department.

Grant was hired by Courtney Love to locate her husband after he left a drug rehab center in Marina Del Rey, California. While the police immediately concluded "suicide", he wasn't so sure. Tom Grant's work and research was extensively documented, and various others have raised interesting questions. While Courtney Love has done her best to silence suspicious claims, you can judge for yourself: http://www.thegrid.net/tomgrant/main.html

burn out, don't fade away

Ironically, for all of Cobain's influence and noise, his death came and went fairly abruptly. While previous stars lived in times when TV and radio were only part of their lives, Cobain was under the microscope at all times. His fans mourned, but it was no surprise to most that the media and critics did not care. So many people should have questioned his death -- they didn't. This was, is, and will remain, odd to me.

One suggestion for this blasé attitude is that Cobain and most of the grunge warriors were seen as unhappy and ungrateful boys who, despite cashing in on their success, had nothing cheerful to sing about.

Ironically, these same guys became famous for being unhappy and now that they were famous and rich, people expected them to sell out and sing about happy happy joy joy . It was thus no surprise that, like everything else in life, Grunge's success was its undoing.

legacy

When the dust settled, Cobain crashed and burned. He is still remembered as a great songwriter, a gifted performer, and a troubled human being who had the misfortune to marry someone like Courtney who is, let's face it, quite a meal for any man to digest.

Before her lawyers ring us up, let it be clear; we will let the detectives question how deeply rooted her involvement was with his death, but it is clear that she never made things easy for the rocker.

Grunge music was officially pronounced dead some time ago. Many of the bands broke up, such as Soundgarden (incidentally, Chris Cornell is now jamming with Rage Against the Machine). Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, however, are still going strong albeit on a smaller scale.

Its real legacy is that Grunge music added a raw edge to Rock music that was sorely lacking. Most rock bands today, like Bush and Matchbox 20, have a more unpolished sound that would not have been in vogue otherwise.

time will tell

While it has only been 7 years since Kurt Cobain's death, his music lives on while the genre he spearheaded has been put to rest for all intensive purposes. Time will tell what future generations think 25 years after his death.

While Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Bon Scott, and John Bonham are still revered and worshipped by legions of fans, some doubt that Cobain, who indeed influenced music just as much, will remember him in the same light.

Since then, Nirvana is still a good seller, Pearl Jam is still releasing albums and touring, Stone Temple Pilots has tried several comebacks with a "clean" Weiland. Of the threesome that comprised Nirvana, bassist Krist Novoselic has laid low, to put it mildly. The same cannot be said about the band's drummer, Dave Grohl.

Grohl, as you probably know, went on to found Foo Fighters. While he was highly regarded as a talented drummer, his musical versatility became clear on the band's eponymous first album: the man played every instrument. He got musicians to join him for the tour and played a more conventional role (i.e. not every instrument) on the follow-up.

Courtney Love has been doing her own thing as well. Since Cobain's passing, her career has skyrocketed and her band, Hole, has received some praise.

Time will also tell whether some will scratch below the surface in years to come to finally provide some answers to all of the lingering questions concerning Kurt's departure...

Nirvana

Nirvana

Nirvana is a grunge rock band whose popularity rose is the 1990’s. Their popularity then had a very influential impact on the radio and music television scene that time that their breakthrough caused alternative rock several years of dominance in music in the 1990’s. Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden and other grunge bands also rode the wave of rock’s emergence that time as a result of Nirvana’s success.

The first members of Nirvana were Kurt Cobain as lead guitarist and vocalist, Kris Novoselic as bass guitarist and Aaron Burckhard as drummer. After a few months however, Burckhard was replaced by Dale Crover then Crover was in turn replaced by Dave Foster. Finally in 1998, Nirvana settled for Chad Channing as their drummer. Like the group’s drummer, the band had to don different names before ending up with Nirvana. Among other names considered were Skid Row, Pen Cap Chew and Ted Ed Fred.

Nirvana released its first album, “Bleach,” in 1989 under Sub Pop records. The one thousand limited copies of the album was sold at the Lamefest in Seattle. Several influences in the album were “The Melvins,” “Mudhoney,” “Black Sabbath” and “Led Zeppelin.” The said album would eventually be discovered by Nirvana’s fans during the group’s success with “Nevermind” and the resulting clamor for copies of it has been responsible for more than 4 million copies of the album sold up to date.

It was not until September 1991 however when the band released their first major album, “Nevermind,” that Nirvana was to start its trek towards becoming the rock icon of the time. In the course of recording for the said album however, Nirvana changed its drummer again from Chad to Dale Crover, then to Dan Peters then finally to Dave Grohl.

“Nevermind” has sold about 10 million copies in the U.S. alone and more than 25 million copies worldwide. The said album has placed the Seattle grunge scene in the limelight and more importantly, the album became significant in placing alternative rock in its entirety into the mainstream that time. “Nevermind” banners the singles “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Come As You Are”, “Lithium” and “In Bloom.” The said singles and the albums topped music charts all over the world.

Nirvana released it’s follow-up album to “Nevermind,” in 1993. The said album was named “In Utero.” which carried their popular singles “All Apologies,” “Heart-Shaped Box” and “Rape Me.” Some singles such as “Rape Me” got the band dealing with corporate censorship as nationwide stores like Wal-Mart and K-Mart cited it along with several other singles and the collage back cover involving a plastic-fetus design as too controversial. The album itself debuted at number 1 in the Billboard Album chart.

Nirvana’s demise started from Cobain’s eventual heroin addiction which eventually led him to rehabilitation. He escaped a week after and after another week was found dead at his home in Seattle. Despite the death of Cobain however, the several post-mortem Nirvana albums were still released.

Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam was one of the big names in the alternative rock music scene in the 1990’s along with Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. Unlike those bands however, Pearl Jam stayed long in the industry and became notable for their rejection in observing accepted music norms that time such as their refusal to create MTV’s for their singles and their renowned protest against Ticketmaster. Sales records as of December 2006 show that the group has sold more than 31 million records in the United States.

Originally, Pearl Jam had Eddie Vedder as lead vocalist, Jeff Ament as bass guitarist, Stone Gosard as rhythm guitarist, Mike McCready in lead guitarist and Dave Krusen in drums. At present, the group’s drummer is Matt Cameron who in turn was a former member of another dissolved grunge rock band, Soundgarden.

The band was formerly named “Mookie Blaylock” after the former NBA player but had to change its name due to possible trademark issues. It was in March 10, 1991 that the group settled with “Pearl Jam.” Among the cited reasons for the choice include a reference to Vedder’s great-grandmother Pearl and her recipe for peyote-laced jam, and that one of the band members wanted “pearl” in their group’s name with jamming as something common among bands.

With its debut album, “Ten,” (named after Mookie Blaylock’s number,) Pearl Jam was on its way to success. Sales were slow after its release on August 27, 1991 until the latter half of 1992 saw the breakout for the band. The album carries the singles, “Even Flow”, “Alive”, “Jeremy” and “Black” and was a mainstay of the Billboard charts for more than 2 years. Currently, “Ten” has already gone 12x platinum and has been considered one of the biggest-selling rock records since.

Pearl Jam’s success continued with the release of its next two albums. Their second album entitled “Vs.”, sold less than a million copies in the first week of its release alone and currently has been certified 7x platinum. Singles in the album include “Daughter”, “Dissident”, “Go”, “Rearviewmirror” and “Animal.” Their third album “Vitalogy” was released on November 22, 1994 and featured the singles, “Spin the Black Circle”, “Not for You”, “Corduroy”, “Immortality” and “Better Man.” “Spin the Black Circle” in particular, earned a Grammy Award for the Best Hard Rock Performance in 1996. The album itself sold less than 900,000 copies in its first week and is at present certified 5x platinum.

Other important Pearl Jam albums include “No Code” (1996), “Yield” (1998), “Binaural” (2000), “Riot Act” (2002) and “Pearl Jam” (2006). Pearl Jam has also won several American Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards and to this day continues with their recording and tours. While the group started being criticized as “being a corporate cash-in on the alternative rock explosion,” it now garners critical acclaim for its music.

Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots is a successful American rock band from California whose popularity stretched from the 1990’s to the early part of the 2000’s. The band’s members included Scott Weiland in vocals, Robert DeLeo in bass guitar and vocals, Dean DeLeo in lead guitar and Eric Kretz in drums and percussion. It was not until 1990 that the band members named the group as such after having considered “Mighty Joe Young,” “Shirley Temple’s Pussy” and “Stereo Temple Pirates.”

The success story of Stone Temple Pilots includes more than 17 million copies of the group’s five albums sold in the U.S. alone, 6 number 1’s of the 15 top ten singles in Billboard’s rock charts, a number 1 album in the pop charts for their 1994 album “Purple” and ultimately a Grammy award in 1994 for the "Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal" for the song “Plush.”

The album “Core” was released in September 29, 1992 and currently has 8x platinum to its credit. The said record features the singles, “Sex Type Thing,” “Plush,” “Wicked Garden” and “Creep.” The said album was such a great success that despite criticisms, the group still gained fans among the rock music crowd.

Stone Temple Pilots’ second album, “Purple,” was released in June 7, 1994 and has already hit 6x Platinum at present. In fact as of October in its release year, the album already sold 3 million copies as the band achieved widespread popularity among rock fans. Popular singles from the record include “Big Empty,” “Vasoline,” “Interstate Love Song” and “Pretty Penny.” The following year however, the band’s vocalist Weiland was arrested for illegal possession of drugs and because of this the remaining members separated briefly.

It was October of 1995 though when Stone Temple Pilots’ got together again with Weiland and worked on its third album. What resulted was the album entitled “Tiny Music… Songs From The Vatican Shop.” The said record is at present 2x Platinum and features the songs “Trippin’ On a Hole in a Paper Heart,” “Lady Picture Show,” “Big Bang Baby” and “Tumble in the Rough.” Again despite the criticisms the album met, rock fans still showed support to the group as was evident in the album’s debut at number 4 in the U.S. charts.

Around 1996 however Weiland’s drug addiction became a problem for the band again that it was not until 1999 when they released their 4th album, “No. 4.” “No. 4” included the singles “Down,” “No Way Out” and “Sour Girl.” Weiland was sentenced to a year in county jail in violation of probation after the album was completed however.

The last Stone Temple Pilots album under Atlantic Records was “Shangri-La Dee Da” and this was released in the summer of 2001. Among the singles included in the record were “Hollywood Bitch” and “Days of the Week.” A year after the release of the said album however, Stone Temple Pilots disbanded after completing its contract with Atlantic.

Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains is a popular rock band which traces its roots to Seattle, Washington in 1987. With over 10 million copies of their albums sold worldwide, the group has become known commercially as one of the most successful from the grunge music groups from Seattle.

Alice in Chains had Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Starr and Sean Kinney as its original members. The group’s name came from Staley’s former band, “Alice ‘N Chainz,” around the time when the group wrote their own material and played at Seattle clubs. After signing with Columbia Records in 1989, the band released its first original EP, “We Die Young” on July 1990. The said album was in preparation for the group’s first full album, “Facelift,” which was released later the same year. Of the singles in “Facelift,” “Man in the Box” and “Sea of Sorrow” ranked 18 and 27 respectively in Billboard’s U.S. Mainstream Rock Tracks charts. The record itself is currently 2x Platinum.

“Sap,” the next EP release of Alice in Chains, featured acoustic music in which the songs “Would?” and “It Ain’t Like That” were used in the motion picture, “Singles.” The album itself features other artists like Ann Wilson of Heart, Mark Arm of Mudhoney and Chris Cornell of Soundgarden. It was the advance release of “Would?” however which would have the public anticipate the next LP which would eventually be called “Dirt.”

“Dirt” was released towards the later part of 1992 and remains the group’s most successful album at present. The said album has reached its first platinum at the end of 1992 and at present is 4x platinum already. “Dirt” gives character to Alice in Chains’ guitar-intense and distortion-filled music along with Staley and Cantrell’s distinctly intricate vocal harmonies. The singles “Would?” and “Them Bones” in 1992 and “Rooster,” “Angry Chair” and “Down In A Hole” in 1993, reached numbers 5, 24, 7, 34 and 10 respectively in the U.S. Mainstream Rock Tracks charts of Billboard and numbers 11, 30, 30, 27 and 10 in the U.S. Modern Rock charts of Billboard. It was during the record’s promotion when Starr left the group and was replaced by Mike Inez.

January of 1994 saw Alice in Chains release its other EP, “Jar of Flies.” The said album would hit 2x Platinum in the U.S. and carried the singles, “No Excuses,” “I Stay Away,” and “Don’t Follow” which ranked numbers 1, 10 and 25 in the U.S. Mainstream Rock charts of Billboard respectively. The band’s self-titled album was released on November of 1995 and at present is already 2x Platinum. The songs “Grind,” “Heaven Beside You,” “Over Now” and “Again” would again rank well in the U.S. Mainstream Rock and U.S. Modern Rock of Billboard charts.

Soundgarden

Soundgarden is another famous Seattle-based rock band during the popularity of the grunge rock genre early 1990’s. The group got its name from the name of an installation of outdoor phonic art at Magnuson Park in Seattle, (“The Sound Garden”.)

Soundgarden’s first members were Chris Cornell as drummer and vocalist, Kim Thayill as guitarist and Hiro Yamamoto as bass guitarist. Eventually, the band got Scott Sundquist so that Cornell would be able to focus on vocals. In 1986 however, Matt Cameron replaced Sundquist as the group’s drummer.

The first recording company to sign the group was Sub Pop. Under the said recording company, Soundgarden released two EP’s, “Screaming Life” in 1987 and “Fopp” in 1988. The two were combined under the label, “Screaming Life/Fopp” which was released in 1990.

Soundgarden released its debut album, “Ultramega OK” when the band was signed by SST Records in 1988. It was the said album which had Soundgarden win a Grammy nomination in 1990 for the category, “Best Metal Performance.” Back in 1989, the band released their first album for a known label, (A&M Records.) It was during this time when Yamamoto left the band to enroll in college so the band replaced him with Jason Everly for a while before settling with Ben Shepherd.

During the release of “Badmotorfinger” in 1991, Soundgarden had some limited success owing to the phenomenal success of Nirvana’s album, “Nevermind.” It was because of the latter though that Soundgarden got some attention that was given to Seattle. The band got to perform with other rock groups in tours as a result of a growing fan base.

March of 1994 would see Soundgarden release its breakout album, “Superunknown.” The record bannered the singles, “Black Hole Sun,” “Spoonman,” “The Day I Tried to Live,” “Fell on Black Days,” “My Wave” and “Superunknown.” The said songs ranked significantly in Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks, Modern Rock Tracks and Top 40 Rock Tracks in 1994 and 1995. The album itself is currently 6x Platinum and has topped the Billboard Top 200 chart in 1994.

Soundgarden’s following self-produced album, “Down on the Upside” would eventually be their last. The record carried the popular singles “Pretty Noose”, “Blow Up the Outside World” and “Burden in My Hand.” Following the release of the said album, the group disbanded because of internal disagreements regarding the group’s creative path. Soundgarden’s breakup was officially announced on April 9, 1997.

Grunge

Kurt Cobain

Steppenwolf

Nama Heavy metal digagas oleh Band Hard RockTahun 60'an Steppenwolf, dalam lagu mereka yang berjudul 'Born To Be Wild' (ada di baris kedua bait kedua).

"I like smoke and lightning Heavy metal thunder Racin' with the wind And the feelin' that I'm under".

Permainan Classic metal.
